Having retired, I decided to learn the basics of watercolour painting as I had always been fascinated by the medium but my attempts up to that point had been pretty grim. I was fortunate in that just down the road from our house in Sheffield, Steve Coates had just set up a studio where he was concentrating on teaching watercolour in a series of classes, which I was lucky enough to join. He opened my eyes to the various techniques and effects possible and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed using the medium ever since.

"A Walk Towards Worms Head, Gower". My wife came from South Wales and this is one of our favourite spots.
"Pebbles." A subject from the group’s programme in the style of Steve Coates who painted several pictures of pebbles during my time on his course.
"Bougainvillea in Greece". Inspired by pictures on Google and from our own holiday.
"A Misty Morning at Devil’s Dyke”. An interpretation of a couple of photos of the local spot near Brighton.
"Littlehampton Signal Box in the age of Steam”. Based on various photos of the Signal Box which still exists and an image of a Schools Class engine.
