Demonstration: Approaches to Abstracting the Landscape with Barbara Whitbourn. Barbara is a professional artist based in Hampshire. She is mainly self-taught but has also studied at Newlyn’s Art School in Cornwall. Barbara is an enthusiastic tutor and passionate about abstraction, the space for the viewer to connect with a painting and to interpret it from their own perspective. Working in lots of transparent layers in mixed media, Barbara builds depth and interest into her abstracted landscapes. Initially sketching en plein air, she then takes her work back to her studio to develop her ideas, at each stage abstracting the subject further. Barbara’s demonstrations and workshops show her techniques and develop her attendee’s ability to abstract the subject through teaching different approaches to abstraction, assisting them to understand where they sit in the reality to abstract spectrum. www.shortacrestudio.com

Demonstration: Action Art using Oil Pastels with Stephen Cheeseman. Stephen is an artist and a painter of people in sport, combining human action and movement with what aids them be the best at what they do. He loves observing an individual or group and secretly inventing a story based on their movement, inflections, and attitude. He works quickly on a coloured canvas in Oil Pastels with references from sketchbooks and photographs he has taken. Although his paintings are realistic in nature they are also slightly abstract, his intention is not to create a painting that looks like a photograph and creates a vibrant active painting showing movement and effort. His aim is to leave the observer wondering how was it done? During his demonstrations he will talk about media selection, composition, colours, and also what he is thinking as he is painting.

Workshop: Watercolours with Joe Dowden. Joe paints because he wants to re-create the beauty he sees around us all, and put you in that same place. A watercolour painting can transport you to another world. It can convey emotion and beauty almost beyond imagination. He has written books and magazine articles and presented Television both outside and inside TV studios for many years, both for video and Television. He has exhibited nationally and internationally in Asia, Russia, China, Europe and the UK, including at West End Galleries and Hotels in London, and various Royal Societies.

The workshop will include a tracing to get everyone started, and an exact scale drawing to work from. Everyone gets a colour image of the painting as well. Joe will demonstrate each process. The are also course notes. These are so that people can take the notes away with them and be helped to remember everything that’s covered on the day.

"I teach by demonstrating each step of the painting, limiting the demonstrations to maximum times, usually 10 to 20 minutes. Then when people are seated I repeat the basics and help each individual in turn, and immediately help anyone who is stuck. www.joedowden.com

Based at the foot of the South Downs the views in and around Brighton, Haywards Heath, Crawley, Gatwick, Chichester and London provide inspiration for his work. He specialises in Landscapes with people and farm animals, painted in oils. These capture the subtle changes of light and shade, throughout the seasons. The inclusion of sheep, cattle, horses and figures in many of his landscapes help to truthfully convey the peaceful atmosphere of modern day rural life. In 2020 he was honoured to have his work accepted by the Royal Society of Marine Artists (RSMA) to be hung in their annual exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London. www.stephenhawkinsart.co.uk
